Less than four years after the Prepare Greater St. Louis Initiative debuted, we have milestones to celebrate.
The Prepare Greater St. Louis Initiative was launched in 2004 and outlined a five-year plan to join with emergency response, business, and community partners to prepare Greater St. Louis along two tracks: Personal Preparedness and Red Cross Readiness. Now, less than four years later, the St. Louis Area Chapter announced milestone achievements in regard to this initiative.

Track One: Personal Preparedness
As part of the "Prepare Greater St. Louis" Track One the Chapter accomplished the following goals set in 2004:
- More than doubled its disaster education outreach from 40,000 people educated per year to 92,000 by the end of June 2008
- Made learning CPR and First Aid easier by launching four on-line courses and reducing classroom time. In addition, on-line registration is available for all classes.
- Launched a practice-while-you-watch First Aid and CPR course complete with a workbook, DVD and practice tools
- Taught people how to build their own emergency supply kits and and made ready-made emergency supply kits available for purchase
- Developed the Red Cross Ready Rating™ Program to guide business, organizations and schools through the preparedness process, utimately reaching individuals thanks to the educational efforts of the Ready Rating Program.
Track Two: Red Cross Readiness
While making it easier for individuals to prepare, the Chapter simultaneously implemented a five-year strategic plan to increase disaster response readiness to Level III as part of the "Prepare Greater St. Louis" Track Two. Homeland Security made this milestone even more imperative, calling for more individuals and businesses to upgrade their disaster readiness levels. Additionally, the new 9/11 Commission Act, which went into effect last year, calls for Homeland Security to develop accreditation programs to measure and increase private sector preparedness.
This spring, the Chapter received official notification from the American National Red Cross that the St. Louis Area Chapter is the first Red Cross chapter in the country to achieve High Level III Readiness, the highest level of readiness a chapter can achieve on its own. The St. Louis Area Chapter now has the people, resources, emergency supplies, shelter agreements, partnerships, and leadership in this community to immediately take care of up to 600 families following a disaster.
As part of the "Prepare Greater St. Louis" Track Two the Chapter significantly expanded its disaster response capabilities in the following ways:
- Grew highly-trained local disaster volunteers from 89 to 382
- Increased the capacity to manage 50 cases to 300 emergency cases
- Increased the number of meals the Chapter could serve each day from 1,000 to 4,000
- Grew the ability to handle disaster relief operations from $50,000 to $250,000
The Chapter achieved these milestones ahead of schedule because of its hard working volunteers, community partners and local donors. We thank you for your dedication, cooperation and support.
