FOCUS St. Louis Regional Disaster Preparedness Report It happens when least expected, often with little or no warning. From a deadly tornado to a chemical spill, there are a variety of potential emergencies posing severe threats to the people and the economy of our region. Do we know the risks? Are we prepared?
After a year of deliberation and research, on September 11, 2007, the FOCUS St. Louis Regional Disaster Preparedness Task Force released a report to the community assessing the region's state of preparedness and offering nearly 20 recommendations pointing the way to a safer, better prepared region. Tsunami Recovery Program Five-Year Report On December 26, 2004, millions of people from Southeast Asia to East Africa experienced one of the worst natural disasters in modern history. In a matter of minutes, the tsunami killed more than 230,000 people, and millions more watched as their homes, shops, boats, places of worship and schools disappeared into an inconceivably powerful wave. Today, villages teem with activity, classrooms are full of students, and marketplaces are alive with business. Five years after the tsunami, survivors are embracing a brighter future, thanks in part to the Red Cross Tsunami Recovery Program. Download the Report. |

Lifesaver Nomination Form The Lifesaver Program is designed to inspire others to get trained in First Aid and CPR by recognizing local citizens who prepared themselves to respond in an emergency situation. Last year, more than 85,000 people were trained locally in CPR and First Aid. Since 1984, the Red Cross Lifesaver Program has honored more than 200 St. Louis heroes. International Humanitarian Law (IHL) In a unique partnership with St. Louis area law schools and colleges, the St. Louis Area Chapter has developed International Humanitarian Law (IHL) curriculum for local high school students. The curriculum is designed to teach critical humanitarian principles that exist in times of war and the responsibility of the civilized nations of the world to adhere to these principles. Topics covered include: landmines, child soldiers, refugees, protections for POW's, tracing and messaging, reasons to respect IHL and consequences of non-compliance with IHL. International Welcome Basket Project
Each year thousands of refugees leave their home countires with little more than the clothes on their backs, coming to the St. Louis community in search of a safe haven- a place to rebuild their lives. Together, we can provide Welcome Baskets to thousands of refugee families coming to the St. Louis area each year. The baskets, containing household basics and warm welcomes, serve as a "starter-kit" to refugee families. People to People - Learning to live with HIV/AIDS
Are you or someone you know living with HIV/AIDS? People to People is a peer-to-peer education program created by the American Red Cross, in collaboration with Kansas City Free Health Clinic and Midwest AIDS Training and Education Center of Missouri (MATEC-MO), to support individuals living with HIV and AIDS. People to People is one of three national peer education and capacity-building centers which provide expertise to the PEER Center, a national resource and evaluation center for organizations interested in launching or maintaining peer programs to support people living with HIV.
