The Hazelwood School District has a sound disaster plan, a representative of the American Red Cross told the school board March 4.
Christy Shultz, executive director of the St. Louis Chapter of the Red Cross, along with Hazelwood Director of Safety Tom Bick, gave a presentation about student safety at the meeting.
"You have an outstanding disaster plan," Shultz told the board. "If you remember in Littleton, Colo., where Columbine High School is, they had a great plan but nobody knew about it."
Shultz said the plan is one of those used in 10 cities across the nation as a model for other cities and school districts to follow.
She said three keys to the success of the program have been planning, training and response.
As partners, the Red Cross and Hazelwood reviewed the plan and made 120 first aid kits for classrooms, with 50 larger kits for common areas such as libraries and cafeterias, Shultz said.
Board member Joe Donahue wanted to know what the Red Cross did recently during orange terrorism alerts last month. He expressed concern that orange is one step away from someone planning a hit on the district.
"We have a wonderful plan, we just hope we don't have to use it," Bick said.
