Senators Jim Talent and Kit Bond (R-Mo.) last week toured the areas hardest hit by the tornadoes and storms that swept through Missouri this week. The two Missouri Senators viewed the damage in Platte and Clay counties in the Kansas City area, Pierce City in Southwest Missouri and Jackson in Southeast Missouri. Each tour was followed by a roundtable meeting with local, state, federal and volunteer recovery officials to discuss what additional federal assistance is necessary to assist victims and officials on the ground.
"Nothing could fully prepare us for the loss of life and massive destruction caused by the tornadoes and severe supercell storms that ravaged Missouri," Talent said. "But there is one thing you can always count on: Missourians resilience. We are going to continue working to deliver additional federal aid as quickly as possible to assist the rebuilding effort and help get people back on their feet."
The Senators were accompanied by FEMA officials, American Red Cross representatives, SBA Disaster Assistance officials as well as other local, state and federal officials. "It is more than likely that supplemental federal assistance will be necessary and I believe it is important to see the damage firsthand so I can advocate for this assistance and discuss, anecdotally, the need for more federal aid," Talent said.
Senators Talent and Bond have worked closely together to ensure that federal agencies quickly provide all available help to Missourians affected by this week's terrible storms. They also sought and won very quick Presidential approval for emergency disaster declarations for affected Missouri citizens, towns, counties and cities.
