The American Red Cross St. Louis Area Chapter announced Nylin Bathke as the 2003 Volunteer of the Year during the Chapter's Volunteer Awards Picnic at Grant's Farm.
Nylin has volunteered for 10 years, beginning as an instructor in the Health & Safety department and teaching people how to save lives. He advanced to an instructor trainer, using the Red Cross "train the trainer" method to spread life saving skills throughout the community. He worked to implement the Pet First Aid program, and has worked at volunteer fairs and information booths helping to promote the important message of learning CPR, First Aid and water safety. Last year he taught 70 courses and trained 625 people in life saving skills.
He is also a Lifeline Installer, distributing Lifeline units and teaching clients how to use the emergency response system that allows them to live independently in their own homes. He helped develop a Department Volunteer Coordinator position within Health & Safety Services, a volunteer liaison function that will soon be implemented in other departments within the Chapter. He is authorized to teach nine different Health and Safety classes, as well as New Volunteer Orientation.
"Nylin Bathke is an inspiration to us all," said Bob Peters, Chair of Volunteers for the St. Louis Area Chapter. "His commitment to the programs and services of the American Red Cross means that we can be trusted to always be there, saving lives everyday throughout our community. Nylin dedicates an incredible amount of time and energy to making his community better, and he has made a profound impact on the St. Louis area."
