The St. Louis Area Chapter of the American Red Cross honored its 2003 St. Charles County volunteers Friday at a Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon at the Stegton Regency Banquet Center in St. Charles. Michael W. Newport, chairman of the board of directors for the local Red Cross chapter, was the master of ceremonies. Joseph C. White, chief executive officer of the St. Louis Area Chapter, was the guest speaker. Bob Peters, chairman of the volunteers, presented the awards.
Among the dignitaries on hand were: Brad Farber, the chief of the St. Charles County Red Cross Service Center; St. Charles Mayor Patti York; Dardenne Prairie Mayor Pam Fogarty; and Weldon Spring Mayor Don Licklider.
Winners of the awards include:
Lindenwood University, presented with one of two Community Cares awards for its effort to present online first-aid and resuscitation courses. The written part of the courses may be taken online, and the practical-skills part is then administered by an instructor.
The Francis Howell School District and the Howell Foundation, which also received a Community Cares award for buying automatic external defibrillators and placing them throughout the district. The district also provides shelter sites and has participated in the American Red Cross Community Disaster Education Blitz Days.
CitiGroup, given the Partners in Caring award for promoting volunteer opportunities by hosting Volunteer Fair Day at their complex, for employee contributions to a nonprofit agency and for promoting Community Education presentations at local school districts.
The Good Neighbor awards were presented to Jason Zytko, manager of Chili's restaurant, for using the lifesaving skills he learned at the Red Cross to save the life of a choking patron; Ann Hazelwood of Patches, Etc., for serving on the board of directors of the St. Louis Area Chapter and producing quilts for raffles, with the proceeds going to the St. Charles County Volunteers Fund; and the Suburban Journals for publicizing Red Cross events.
Ruth Neimer and Ed and Georgina Meinhart received the Blood Services Award for their work to improve the local blood supply.
Hester Menier and Al Barnett received the Health and Safety Award for teaching others how to save lives through CPR, First Aid and automatic external defibrillator instruction.
Michelle Pegg, Connie Moore and Lloyd and Barbara Hawkins received the New Outstanding Volunteer Award.
John Stamelos, Dawn Lissner and Bob Murphy were presented with the Humanitarian Service Award.
Winners of the Disaster Services Award were Ivan Smallen, Susan Conner, Tammy Green, Brian Kratky and Bev Relford.
A certificate of appreciation was given to Megan Bammann, a third grade student at Henderson Elementary School for creating a book called "Cool Cat Coconuts," which demonstrates the impact of Red Cross Community Disaster Education presentations.
Kerry McBee received the Honorary Service Award, and Lavon Gilliland was honored with the Meritorious Service Award.
