Carolyn Mosley said Monday that she and her four children had lost most of their belongings in a fire that St. Charles authorities said was intentionally set.
Mosley said she was not at home when the fire broke about 10 p.m. Friday. “I don’t know anything about it,” she said.
An unrelated fire damaged an apartment building in Wentzville on Monday.
Fire investigators and police detectives continued to work on the St. Charles fire on Monday. No one was hurt in the blaze.
“Basically, this was a set fire,” said Dave Lewis, the fire department spokesman.
Tom Bocklage, who owns the dwelling – a duplex in the 1100 block of Howell Street – said the fire had begun on the rear deck. Damage to the rear of the duplex was heavy, but tenants in the other apartment were not forced out by the fire.
Mosley said she and her four children, ages 9 to 14, were getting help from the Red Cross.
“We have to start all over again,” she said.
Mosley said her youngest child was with her in her car when another child – at home with an adult friend – called to say their apartment was on fire.
On Monday in Wentzville, a fire that started in a bedroom damaged the Hidden Valley Apartments. No one was hurt in the fire, which was reported shortly after 10 a.m. The cause of the fire, in a four-apartment building in the 1100 block of Evergreen Court, had yet to be determined, said Chief Randy Bornhop of the Wentzville Fire Protection District.
A young adult and a child were at home when the fire started; their mother was at work, Bornhop said. Red Cross officials helped relocate the family. Residents of the three other apartments were able to return home.
Firefighters initially feared that a gusty wind Monday would make the fire spread. But Bornhop said firefighters moved quickly to extinguish the blazSe before the wind could be a factor.
