On Thursday, July 15, the St. Louis Area Chapter of the American Red Cross delivered an emergency shelter trailer with equipment to Iron County Emergency Management and Red Cross of Iron County.
Mary Anderson, Manager of Disaster Services, delivered the two-wheeled trailer to Don Wynn, Iron County Emergency Management Director, and Catherine Hillquist, Red Cross Coordinator for Iron County, at the Arcadia Valley Ambulance building. The “Shelter Trailer” consists of 50 cots and blankets, plus a shelter kit, which contains registration cards, office supplies, directional signs, toilet paper, paper towels, hygiene supplies and more.
“It’s everything you need to open a shelter,” said Anderson.
According to Wynn, the shelter trailer will be centrally located in Arcadia Valley, to be dispatched immediately to any location in the county in the event of an emergency or disaster. Once a disaster occurs, the Red Cross will dispatch more supplies and personnel to that location.
The trailer will be in the county to assist the 50+ volunteers who took training this Spring in Annapolis, Arcadia Valley and Viburnum. There are now 14 designated shelters throughout the county ready for use in case of an emergency or a disaster, Wynn said.
“We are thankful for the work Don and Kitty (Catherine) have done for Red Cross,” said Anderson. “Iron County is well prepared for a disaster.”
Patrick Keena, a volunteer manager who assisted Anderson in delivering the trailer, said Iron County has done a great job in preparing for emergencies.
“If there were more counties that had the interest of Iron County, we’d all be better off,” said Keena.
Wynn said county officials, emergency management and city officials, along with the supportive volunteers, are all continually striving to better prepare the county in the event of a disaster or an emergency.
