Other 12 year-old boys might spend money they collect on video games or remote-controlled cars but not Kevin Wilson. He raised $262 over three years and donated it to the Red Cross to give to Florida residents impacted by this year’s hurricanes.
The Russell Elementary sixth grader has been collecting for charity since he was in third grade. The first time, he gave his donation to Backstoppers.
“We sold lemonade on our street,” Kevin said of the way he made the money from 2002 to 2004. “It was a two-person job, usually.” He said his sister or some friends would assist him. They used a lemonade stand his father made for them.
“We were going to keep the money for ourselves, but then we started thinking about giving it to people and helping out,” Kevin said.
This year’s tropical storm season made him focus his plans, as he decided to give his loot to those impacted by the storms.
