Normandy Middle School donated approximately $1,300 to the American Red Cross for tsunami relief efforts. During January, the school organized contribution initiatives for students and staff members. For student donations, faculty members set up contribution stations throughout the school. Over a two-week period, the students contributed nearly $300.
For staff members, the school set up three incentive plans to encourage donations. “Sweating for Tsunami” gave staff members the opportunity to donate $5 or $10 to wear jeans, sweat suits or jogging suits on Jan. 19. Staff members willing to make larger donations were given a greater incentive. Those who donated at least $100 were give approval to wear jeans every Friday for the remainder of the school year. The faculty also conducted a two-day silent auction. All of the goods and services posted were contributed and bid upon by staff only. In total, the staff members raised more than $1,000.
Instructors Blondell Rall and Teri Byrne organized the charitable initiatives.
