Students, staff, administrators and parents in the Kirkwood and Webster Groves school districts are working to raise money for the victims of the tsunami in south Asia.
Webster Groves High School presented a $4,500 check to the St. Louis Chapter of the American Red Cross for tsunami relief. The students raised the money over five days in an effort coordinated by the social studies department
Terry Verstraete, chairman of the social studies department, said money keeps pouring in at Webster Groves High School.
“We’ve raised another $500 since we shut the program down, and we’ll pass all of that along to the Red Cross,” he said.
“I’ve never seen anything like it in my 11 years at Webster Groves High School,” said Terry Verstraete, chairman of the social studies department. “It just took off from the first day. Kids were dropping their Christmas money in the buckets.”
At Webster’s Avery Elementary, a group of fifth-grade girls are selling orange “Avery” bracelets to raise money, and fourth-grade students at Webster’s Clark Elementary are raising money for Save the Children, an international humanitarian relief and disaster organization.
Students at the Computer School are making cards for children in the stricken areas, and are also bringing in donations they plan to present to the Red Cross.
In Kirkwood Students at Kirkwood High School raised over $2,600 for the Red Cross. In a program promoted by radio station KEZK, students at Westchester Elementary “Dressed Down for Disaster Relief,” with each student and staff member donating a minimum of 50 cents to wear pajamas or sweat suits to school.
Also at Westchester, the third-grade class is holding a three-week fundraiser in the name of school custodian Noosin Smith. Smith is from Thailand and lost friends and family in the tsunami. All proceeds raised in her name will go to disaster relief in her native country.
Students at Kirkwood’s Keysor Elementary and Robinson Elementary are raising money by doing chores or selling hot chocolate at stands the students build themselves.
The North Kirkwood Middle School Student Council is selling snacks after school the week of Jan. 10-14 to raise funds for the tsunami victims. At North Glendale Elementary, fourth-grade students are being asked to “Read 4 Relief” on Jan.14. Parents and community members will sponsor students in a read-a-thon that morning, with proceeds going to UNICEF.
