Students at Trautwein Elementary are ready for a disaster – thanks to the American Red Cross. Recently, American Red Cross St. Louis Area Chapter C.E.O. Joe White presented its Red Cross Ready Award to Trautwein Elementary School’s Principal Joan Wiese and school nurse Nancy Becker.
During the nine-month program, the entire student body was trained by members of Red Cross AmeriCorps and Youth Services in disaster preparedness related to home fires, winter storms, earthquakes and tornadoes. Also, students received education focusing on anti-bullying, basic First Aid, water safety, and appropriate precautions for older children who spend time home alone.
The program included presentations emphasizing the importance of good eating, exercise and sleep habits. The Red Cross AmeriCorps members who worked with the Trautwein students included: Elizabeth Baker, Marie Major, Alexa Pippin and Elena Sabin.
Through presentations led by Red Cross AmeriCorps members, approximately 2,800 participants have been reached through 115 presentations. Deane Adam, director of AmeriCorps and Youth Services is looking forward to expanding the program to other elementary schools in the Mehlville School District next year.
