No one was hurt during an afternoon fire Monday that completely destroyed a condominium in a senior citizens community in Arnold.
Rock Community Fire Protection District Chief Matt Mayer said he was impressed by the way the fire was contained by fire walls at the structure in the 600 block of Woodland Meadows.
“Four units are attached together, separated by fire walls,” Mayer said. “One unit was burnt out. Another one had smoke and water damage.”
“What separates the condos are fire walls, and they did their job.”
Mayer said that Rock Community received a call about the fire at 3:34 p.m. “We had it under control at 4 p.m.,” he said. “We left the scene at 6 p.m.”
No one was home in the condo that was destroyed at the time of the fire, Mayer said, adding that no injuries were reported by the residents of the condo or by firefighters during the incident.
“There was a small dog rescued by a citizen,” he said.
Fire Marshal Jerry Cloin said the cause of the fire is under investigation.
“We believe it to be accidental,” he said.
The names of the residents of the destroyed condo are not being released, Cloin said.
The Springdale, Shady Valley and Mehlville fire districts assisted Rock Community in battling the fire. Antonia firefighters moved up to the Rock Community station to cover for it while its members were busy with the condo fire. The Rock Township Ambulance District came to the scene to provide support.
An American Red Cross Disaster Action Team from the Jefferson County Service Center responded to the fire and is supporting the recovery effort of those displaced by the blaze.
