- Providing relief to a victim of disaster ….Priceless.
As the Disaster Action Team (DAT) Specialist for the American Red Cross, St. Louis Area Chapter, I have a front row seat to the Red Cross Mission in action. Everyday I work with Red Cross volunteers who are passionate about providing relief to victims of disaster and helping people prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies.

When the DAT arrives at the scene of a fire, often we are the first face the family sees outside of the emergency responders. Often times the client may be overwhelmed by what has happened to them. And while we provide disaster clients with assistance for food, clothing, shelter and life sustaining medication, sometimes the most valuable service we provide is emotional support and information. For many clients, this is the first time they have experienced a house fire. For the Red Cross, we respond to over 1000 fires a year. We work with the clients to determine their immediate emergency needs. Then, together we devise a recovery plan.
How are we able to do this? We are able to do it because…
- Our volunteers generously share their time, expertise and empathy.
- Our donors charitably give financial support – in the forms of donations, grants, in-kind items and services.
- Our partners in the community team with us to meet the needs of those affected by disasters.
These gifts and the community teamwork are priceless and we depend on them everyday. And we are grateful everyday!
Thank you!
Becky
