On the Today Show this morning, Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar announced Statue of Liberty visitors could climb a little higher beginning July 4. Since September 11, 2001, visitors who have been allowed to climb to the Statue’s crown have been limited, but Matt, Meredith, Al and Ann all made the trek up to the crown today to join Salazar for the announcement.

During his remarks, Salazar said, “We’ve been through some very tough times. The economic times we’re going through really call for hope and optimism. Nothing symbolizes hope and optimism in the United States of America [like] the Statue of Liberty.”

Well, I think there are a few more symbols of hope and optimism for both the United States and the world. Maybe it’s because the organizations are close to my heart, but when I see the Red Cross or Red Crescent, I think of hope and optimism too, especially today as we celebrate World Red Cross Red Crescent Day.

This year the theme we celebrate is "Sister Societies Working Together," which pays tribute to Henri Dunant’s (Red Crescent movement founder) vision and highlights the many ways in which Red Cross and Red Crescent societies around the globe partner to protect the lives and dignity of people everywhere. From helping communities adapt to the impact of climate change to save lives through the “Our World. Your Move.” campaign to educating people on precautions to take for H1N1 (swine flu) and so much more.

Two of the “more” things are, since it’s raining cats and dogs in St. Louis and the winds are picking up, take a minute to read how you can prepare for thunderstorms and tornadoes.

Here’s to hope, optimism and a safe day.
