In less than 72 hours Hurricane Season will begin, and already an early arrival along the eastern coastline. Tropical Depression 1 looks to make only a “hello” wave and move off to sea.   Why am I thinking of Hurricane Season in St. Louis? Last year the remnants of Ike came through causing quite a stir, and the subsequent activation of even more Red Cross volunteers. Several volunteers were already in Texas and Louisiana assisting with Ike and Gustav, not expecting Ike to come into their backyard! The Red Cross was able to support the multiple, simultaneous disasters because of a dedicated group of volunteers who were willing to do their part helping their communities.

Red Cross volunteers help provide relief during Hurricane Ike.

Not every volunteer chooses to travel across the country into a declared disaster area; they would rather wait it out and work locally – which is obviously needed! Every trained volunteer performs work that is essential to helping communities get back on their feet and allows the American Red Cross to perform its mission. The Red Cross has many different jobs that need volunteers. Bring your experience and desire to help and we will help make a match for you! Each person works together, building a team that works with other teams to provide the great service the American Red Cross is known for, day in and day out. Everything from answering phones, driving a forklift, listening to affected families tell their story, working a feeding line, and even setting up satellite communications is done with professionalism and confidence. A thank you goes to the volunteers who get the job done, and to those who want to join our great organization. Please call today, hurricane season is only hours away.

Dale Chambers is the manager of the Jefferson County Service Center.
