After being killed in action almost 60 years ago, the remains of Sergeant Charles “Leo” Wilson will be flown home on Wednesday August 5th. The date of Sgt. Wilson’s death is estimated to be on our about Nov. 27, 1950, five months after North Korea invaded the South, when the U.S. Army committed its first divisions to battle by battalion. Defense Department officials say a North Korean farmer found the remains in 2000.
To honor Sergeant Wilson and to show support to his family during this difficult time, the American Red Cross will join the Patriot Guard and Airport police in lining the Cargo area of the airport when the flight carrying his remains land and while his remains are transported to his final resting place in Rolla.
The Red Cross is asking that any volunteers, their family, and friends who would like to attend and pay respects gather at the Cargo area Wednesday, August 5th, 2009 beginning at 1:15p.m. but no later than 1:45 p.m. We will be lining the cargo area to show our support and at the same time not be intrusive to the family during their time of grief.
To get to the cargo area, take the airport exit and follow the “Cargo” signs east to the cargo area. You will go past the east terminal and will be heading to the same area as the Patriot Guard and airport police.
Please wear a Red Cross shirt or vest. If you do not have one, please wear a solid red shirt if possible. Please keep in mind that, if there is a chance of rain, bring an umbrella or rain jacket. Please refrain from bringing signs or banners of any kind. Small American flags are permitted.
If you would like to attend, please contact Alice Dyle at 314-516-2843.
Nicole Holtgrefe is the director of client services and preparedness for the St. Louis Area Chapter.
