Our disaster services department is hard at work everyday making sure the St. Louis Area Community is prepared for disasters. That’s why it came as no surprise when our Disaster Warehouse Manager, Tony- while brushing up on his disaster research- shared with me some great information from the United Nation’s Risk Reduction Conference earlier this summer.

Back in June, the International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (ISDN) set some pretty specific targets “as catalysts for cutting deaths and economic losses brought on by disasters.”

For example…
  1. Establish financial commitments to Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) by 2010 (an example being a minimum of 10% of all humanitarian and reconstruction funding, at least 1% of development funding, and at least 30% of climate change adaptation funding to DRR

  2. Conduct a global evaluation of schools and hospitals by 2011 and implement a firm action plan to make the schools and hospitals safer by 2015

  3. Use building and land codes to enforce DRR measure in all major cities by 2015
Those of course are only a few of the highlights which all culminate in the ultimate goal of reducing the number of disaster related deaths by 2015. Way to go team!

You already know what the St. Louis Area Chapter does to prepare for, prevent and respond to emergencies, so why not learn what the United Nations is doing? Visit the ISDN.

Thanks for sharing, Tony! And if you have a story you want to share, let us know! Email me at lweber@redcrossstl.org. We always love to hear from you!!
