I arrived at the University City Red Cross shelter this morning at 8. I’m helping with the daily operations and making sure the guests’ needs are met. It’s pretty slow right now. The five guests we had last night returned to their homes to assess the damage. But we’re still open, ready to help people in need.

If people arrive, the other volunteers and I will show them around, offer them coffee and cookies, and make them comfortable. We have showers available if needed and we have a quiet room with cots, blankets and comfort kits. We have meals and snacks ready and we have games and a tv to pass the time. The facility is very nice and the staff here have been very kind and helpful.

We’ll continue to staff the shelter as long as it’s needed. My goal is to make sure everyone is comfortable and feels welcome.
