For $75 you can provide a Red Cross volunteer with a bicycle -- to travel roads impassable by cars and trucks to educate families about how to protect themselves against disasters and diseases.

For most of us, a bicycle is nothing out of the ordinary. We see them daily on the streets, in the parks, and in our neighborhoods. They are transportation, recreation and sport. Many of us had bikes as children, first with training wheels and then without. Our families taught us how to ride and put bandages on our knees when we fell. My uncle taught me how to ride a bike and we still talk about it to this day.

Some of us rode our bikes to the soda shop and candy store “way back when” while some of us relied on them in college to get from class to class. Some of our bikes had baseball cards tucked into the spokes, some were accessorized by baskets and horns, and nowadays, some bikes are fancier than your first car.

The point is bicycles are a part of our daily lives- so much so that we don’t even really notice them anymore. But for some people around the world, the presence of a bicycle is pretty hard to miss.

People living in remote locations around the world often have difficulty accessing basic information and services. But with a bicycle, they are able to travel roads impassable by cars and trucks. Within the Red Cross, volunteers in remote locations use bicycles to spread the word, to educate families about protection against diseases, and to protect from and respond to disasters. When a bicycle translates into the difference between life and death-their presence is anything but ordinary.

For $75 you can provide a Bicycle for a Red Cross Volunteer.

I did. Because I don’t know what I would do without my bicycle and I certainly can’t imagine what our Red Cross Volunteers would do without theirs.
