Did someone say they saw the St. Louis Cardinals in Haiti? Well, not quite, but it’s pretty close…

During her deployment to Haiti, American Red Cross Volunteer Winnie Romeril snapped a photo of a Haitian man receiving aid. A local radio station handed out emergency hand crank radios from the American Red Cross, and this particular gentleman was a lucky recipient. But what really caught my attention was what the gentleman was wearing…

Being the passionate St. Louisan that I am (pitchers and catchers report in 16 days!), I just couldn’t help but smile, realizing that maybe Haitians and I have more in common than I think.

Nearly three weeks after the devastating earthquake, The American Red Cross continues to provide relief to the Haitian community in both the capital city and outlying areas. Together with our partners, the Red Cross is producing almost 1 million liters of water per day, providing mental health care to 600 patients a day, and working to scale up latrine construction as quickly as possible. To date, the Red Cross has distributed relief items such as hygiene kits, blankets, tarps, sleeping mats, tents and water containers to more than 10,000 families (50,000 people).

Because of the generosity of donors, people in Haiti will receive more than immediate relief — they will receive resources, support and training from the Red Cross that will help them recover and rebuild in the years ahead. Wonder where your $10 might go? A $10 donation can provide a first aid kit equipped with enough ointment and bandages for a Red Cross responder to treat 15-20 injured earthquake survivors. $10 can also provide a family with two water cans to store clean drinking water, basic first aid supplies or a blanket appropriate to the climate.
