Students and staff from the FAHLO Christian Academy presented Cindy Erickson of the Red Cross with a check for Haiti Relief. To see this photo and more, visit the “Haiti Relief Donor Gallery.”

On March 1st, twenty-two students, ranging from pre-school to 5th grade, visited the Chapter with their donation for Haiti Disaster Relief. Thelma Bryant, director of FAHLO Christian Academy, related how the students wanted to support Haiti relief. They decided not to have their annual Valentine Day party, but instead donate money to the families in Haiti.

The Academy stresses the importance of giving to one’s neighbor in need. This opportunity gave the students an actual project to demonstrate what they had been taught by their teachers and parents. Such excitement surrounded the students as they donated funds toward the Haiti effort and made plans to visit the Chapter. Phyllis Greene, in our Accounting Department, has known the director of FAHLO for many years. When the director of the Academy voiced an interest in donating to Haiti Relief, she contacted Phyllis.

On arrival to the Chapter, the students and teachers met CEO Cindy Erickson. As the students posed for the photos with Cindy, one could see the pride in their accomplishment. Quarters, nickels, dimes, and pennies, all added up to a generous donation.

Elena Sabin in Disaster Services and Sara Strawhun in Youth Services gave presentations on disaster preparedness and sought feedback from the students. It was apparent that the students were excited about learning and interacting with Elena and Sara.

On the following day, I received a telephone call from a parent of two students at the Academy. The father informed me that his sons were still excited about their visit to the American Red Cross and learning about disaster preparedness. He stated that the dinner table hour was full of conversation about earthquakes, fires, and how to stay safe. The family plans to visit our website and to encourage others to do the same.

To see more photos from our dedicated community partners, visit the Haiti Relief Donor Photo Gallery, and stay tuned for more stories of generosity from our community.

Thank you FAHLO Christian Academy!!

Yvonne
