I am the shelter manager at the American Red Cross shelter at Winfield High School in Lincoln County. As of right now, I have been stationed at the registration desk at the high school and answering lots of phone calls. All day long I have people calling me for information about how to volunteer with sandbagging, where to give blood, how to donate money or asking simply about what they can do to help. We even have people who show up at the shelter looking for volunteer opportunities!

Right now, we have a large crew outside filling sandbags for the National Guard. Our fellow Red Cross volunteers and some spontaneous volunteers fill the sandbags, while others load each bag into a trailer. Then, the National Guard takes the trailers of sandbags to the levee and other sites around the area.

I have another set of volunteers who are going on food and water runs for the shelter guests and volunteers. They run around all day to make sure we are all okay. We have also had local residents bring us up lots of water – which was very helpful yesterday because it was so hot. Today, though, I have to say we are very thankful for the overcast sky.

All of our shelter guests have left for the day. Some have gone off to work and others have gone to help with sandbagging efforts. Everyone around here is doing what they can to make a difference. It is amazing.

Nancy and her husband, Bill, are American Red Cross volunteers currently at the shelter at Wentzville High School. For information on what you can do to help flood relief efforts, call 314.516.2800 or click here.
