As the Youth Services intern, I have been spending a great deal of time giving health & safety and disaster preparedness presentations to kids at Combs Elementary in Florissant. I was the unofficial health teacher this school year for my group of amazing second graders. While the presentations are fun and the kids are engaged, sometimes my coworkers and I wonder if the kids retain any of the information we give them. A note written to a second grade teacher, Ms. Whitaker, by the grandmother of one of the boys, Gaige, answered our questions:
Ms. Whitaker,
I wanted to share with you and Gaige’s classmates some great news! Sunday night when it was storming very bad, I was very scared. But thanks to Gaige explaining to me what to do if a bad storm should come, I was safe. Gaige told me where I should go to be safe at my apartment complex. He told me to bring water, a candle, and something to eat. Fortunately, there was not a tornado but thanks to Gaige I was prepared and felt very safe. Thank you, Gaige’s Grandmother
Although some of us cringed slightly when we saw “candle” instead of “flashlight,” we were so proud and happy to know that the children we teach are remembering and applying important information. Plus, the huge grin on Gaige’s face when Ms. Whitaker showed me the note was absolutely priceless!

You are truly amazing. When I teach my middle schoolers about the Red Cross and Clara Barton during the CIvil War, I will mention this story to show how the Red Cross is still reaching out to people today. Personal hero of the week award!

Whitney - Great story! Glad you are influencing young lives for the better! Although it's difficult, if not impossible, to measure prevention, please know that the things you have taught these kids could save a life one day. Thanks to you and the Red Cross for providing these important programs to our youth. Keep up the good work!
