Flags at memorial site on Art Hill
|
There were numerous memorials of the 9/11 anniversary this weekend. We were reminded on TV, at church services and public tributes of the heroism and innocence lost on that day. Many Americans spent at least part of the weekend volunteering – myself included.
I was privileged to be able to help at the Great Fire Engine Rally Ball. 250+ firefighters from around the metro area coming together is an awesome sight. I come from a long line of firefighters, and it was great to be surrounded by their energy, their good hearted humor and their pride in the work they do.
On Saturday, I rode a shift with the Red Cross Disaster Action Team (DAT). We were tasked with canteening the firefighters who were standing vigil at the memorial site on Art Hill. For those who missed it, it was truly an amazing display. Thousands of American flags, each with the name of someone lost on that day, stirring in the breeze, watched over by volunteer firemen. These guys don’t get paid to fight fire and they did not get paid to be there on Saturday. They were just there as firemen always are to watch over, to protect and to keep safe what is precious. It reminded me of how the American Red Cross is always there – standing by, ready to help, getting people back on their feet.
As DAT members, we are witness to some great tragedies – whether it is a massive hurricane, the twister that takes out half the town or the house fire down the street – it can be a heartbreaking job. But we are so privileged to work alongside the First Responders who show us constantly what strength, courage and compassion are all about. On this weekend it was a great reminder about the strength of our country and the spirit of its people.

Re: Lori Holtmeier – Strength, Courage and Compassion
Lori, I always look forward to your postings on the RC Blog. You are an expressive writer and seem to be able to cut right to the heart of what you are trying to relate to us. I especially like how you usually take your topic and at some point reflect back on how the Red Cross is there to serve so many. Just like you wrote of the volunteer responders who don't get paid, but were on Art Hill to protect the flags that represent the 3000 who had perished on 9/11, so too the Red Cross is there when disaster hits. Thanks, Lori for taking the time to write.
