One week from today, just hours before America inaugurates our first African-American president, millions of people will join Barack Obama in a national Day of Service – volunteering in thousands of different projects across the country. In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., most of the country has a day off from work. But Obama and others are encouraging you to see it as a “day on” instead. Check out the video to get inspired.
The idea is to make public service and volunteer efforts a greater priority in American life. Here at the Red Cross, we are partnering with HOPE worldwide, a faith-based volunteer organization, to distribute fire safety information to more than 2,000 homes in the St. Louis and East St. Louis communities.

Whether you choose to participate on January 19th or not, there are unlimited volunteer opportunities within the Red Cross. Here are just a few:
- Help out with blood drives
- Teach disaster preparedness education to kids around the St. Louis area
- Respond to fires and help families who are in shock and need assistance
- Deploy to a major national disaster (hurricane, tornado, flood, etc.)
- Teach First Aid/CPR/AED
- Become a Lifeguard or water safety instructor
- Install in-home Lifeline units for area seniors who want the freedom to stay in their homes
