If you haven’t noticed yet, there’s certainly no way to ignore it this week. Winter is here and cold doesn’t even begin to describe it. It’s so cold my breath froze before I had the chance to see it. It’s so cold, I don’t think Snuggies even stand a chance. It’s so cold that…alright…my jokes are as miserable as the temperatures, but my tips to stay warm are right on target. So whether you are trying to keep yourself, your family, or your home warm and safe this winter, the Red Cross has you covered.

When it comes to keeping you and your family warm the simplest way is to dress in layers. Multiple light layers are more effective than one heavy layer, so take that into consideration before heading out for the day. And if you are braving the outdoors, make sure you wear a hat that covers your ears, insulated waterproof boots (in the case of ice and snow), and mittens or gloves. Mittens will actually keep your hands warmer, but if you need the functionality, gloves-or a couple of pairs- should do the trick.

If you are lucky enough to be staying indoors, there are a few things to keep in mind. If you have to use alternative heat sources, be cautious. Make sure the device is approved, at least 3 feet away from combustible materials, and turned off when you exit a room or go to sleep. And try not to overuse your electrical outlets or extension cords. The number of home fires dramatically increases during the winter, so make sure your smoke detectors are in working order.

Even though we are only dealing with cold temperatures this week, it’s never too soon to be prepared for a winter storm. Make sure you have a disaster supplies kit for both your home and vehicle. And as always, you can purchase a ready made kit on our website or find a list of items to make one of your own. You never know when the kit will come in handy.

And last but not least, don’t forget about your pets. If possible, bring your pets inside. And if for some reason they can’t come in, make sure you provide them with adequate shelter and an unfrozen water supply.

For more information on staying safe and warm during the frigid days of winter, check out the Red Cross website for details. Or if you have suggestions, comments, stories, or you just want to say hi, let us know. We love hearing from you.

Stay Warm!
Lindsey
