Volunteers Norman Bellairs and Jim Sparks listen to the scanners for fire calls in the DAT room.

Snowfall from the past two days may have closed down some 700 schools and businesses around the St. Louis area, but it hasn’t stopped the Red Cross! We have our Disaster Action teams ready to go should they need to help out anyone who’s home is affected by a fire.

This morning, Norman Bellairs and Jim Sparks are manning the DAT team here at Chapter Headquarters. They are faithful volunteers who say they never really considered staying home because of the snow. Although navigating the streets this morning was a bit tricky, Jim says he’s eager to use the 4-wheel drive in the DAT vehicle because he has "wanted to use it for a while."

Yesterday, during some of the worst sleet of the morning, our St. Charles crew responded to a fire in Cottleville. Check out the picture from the Cottleville Fire Protection District! The Red Cross provided the family of three adults with food, clothing, winter coats and shoes.

So if you have a chance to play in the snow today – take advantage. But know there are some amazing volunteers here at the Red Cross giving up their “snow day” to help others.
