Cher was saved by this maneuver when she was choking on a multivitamin while in rehearsal. - Daily Press
This week marked the 89th birthday of Dr. Henry Heimlich, the American doctor who first advanced the practice of using abdominal thrusts to help a choking victim. In his honor, the Daily Press has created a Top 10 list of celebrities who were saved using the Heimlich maneuver. Cher is one... can you guess the others?

Also this week – celebrity chef Joan Nathan wrote an Op-Ed article in the New York Times about her own choking experience. Fellow celebrity chef Tom Colicchio (you know, the Top Chef judge) came to her rescue, using the abdominal thrusts to dislodge a large chunk of chicken. Nathan is encouraging all restaurant owners to make sure everyone on their staff knows this important life-saving technique.

Do you know someone who used the Heimlich to save a life? Let us know about it! Nominate them for a Lifesaver Award. Just last month we honored three people who used abdominal thrusts to help save children who were choking at school.

Re: Katie Nagus -- Top 10 Celebs Saved From Choking

Thanks for the reminder of how important it is to know about what to do in an emergency. I was talking with my friend the other day, and when her one-year-old began choking on a piece of food, she didn't know what to do, but luckily someone in her family was there who was prepared and acted.
