The 2009
Measles Initiative is underway. Each year a disease that has been eliminated in the Western Hemisphere kills nearly 454,000 people globally. Of those, 410,000 are children under the age of five.

As the new supervisor for
International Services at the Red Cross, I’ve been pushing to get the word out on this important initiative aimed at reducing measles related deaths world wide.
International Services aims to connect people locally with issues globally and this is one program where every dollar raised or donated here in town has a very direct impact on communities throughout the world. With the help of my intern, Cayla Clark and many other dedicated volunteer staff, we have assembled over 2,500 Chocolate Roses to sell, raising funds for the initiative. These make a great gift for Valentine’s Day and 100% of every dollar raised goes to the production, delivery, and administering of a potentially lifesaving vaccine. Direct
donations to the initiative can also be made online from this site.
In addition to the Chocolate Roses campaign, I am planning a variety of other fundraising events for the spring and summer. All interested, creative, and dedicated people who would like to contribute ideas or resources for fundraising events are welcome to lend a hand. As with all our programs at the Red Cross, the success of the Measles Initiative thrives on the spirit of volunteerism and generosity of our community.
If you are interested in purchasing
Chocolate Roses- individually or in bulk-,
