Granite City, IL (Thursday, January 16, 2003) – American Red Cross disaster volunteers responded to four related house fires at six this morning. Red Cross is helping with the immediate needs of food, clothing and shelter for 15 people left homeless after the fire destroyed three homes Illinois Street. Another nearby home was badly damaged by smoke and water, and Red Cross is helping those six residents as well. Red Cross volunteers also provided nourishment and comfort for the firefighters who were battling the blaze.
Red Cross conducted damage assessment of the homes, is coordinating housing for the families and is currently providing casework to help with both short-term and long-term disaster-caused needs, including vouchers for clothing, food, shelter, medical and occupational needs.
