ST. LOUIS (Wednesday, October 23, 2002) –The American Red Cross is seeking nominations for its Lifesaver Program, which honors everyday heroes in the community who have saved a life. A Lifesaver may be a friend or family member, a firefighter or police officer, a lifetime blood donor, or a child who saves an animal’s life. A Lifesaver can be a professional trained to respond to an emergency, or someone who was in the right place at the right time when someone needed help.
Each year, the Red Cross awards Lifesaver Awards in the following categories:
• Good Samaritan Lifesaver is presented to an ordinary citizen who used their lifesaving training skills to save the life of another person. • Youth Good Samaritan is awarded to a lifesaver under the age of 21. • Workplace Lifesaver is given to a non-professional rescuer who saves a life at his or her office, manufacturing plant, construction site or other workplace. • Firefighter, EMS, Police Officer and 911 Dispatch Lifesavers are four individual awards presented to professionals for heroic actions above and beyond the call of duty. • Blood Donor Lifesaver is given to someone whose lifetime donation of whole blood or platelets has saved many lives and influences others to do the same. • Animal Rescue Lifesaver is awarded to a person who has performed a heroic rescue to save the life of an animal.
Since 1984 the Red Cross Lifesaver Awards program has honored more than 120 local citizens who have used First Aid, CPR or other actions to save a life.
