What: In recognition of National School Safety Week (Oct. 21-25), the Red Cross St. Louis Area Chapter will host a press conference at Hazelwood West High School, the pilot location of its Safe Schools program. The press conference will update the community on the progress and next steps of its Safe Schools program, including the addition of the Belleville School District to the program. Multiple Safe Schools activities will happen simultaneously at the Hazelwood West High School Campus during the conference. Since 2000, the Red Cross Safe Schools Pilot Program has trained nearly 10,000 students, teachers and administrators in the Hazelwood School District for disaster prevention and response. Corporate sponsors for the program include: AT&T Wireless, Enterprise Rent-A-Car Foundation and Target Stores.

Photo/ Interview Opportunities: The following Safe Schools activities will happen simultaneously at the Hazelwood West High School Campus. • School First Aid Kits: 30 Hazelwood high school students packing 120 classroom first aid backpacks for the School District. • Anti-Bullying Training: Approximately 20 Hazelwood high school students participating in anti-bullying training taught by Marilyn Bader from the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse. The students will serve as peer educators for 7th and 8th graders. •CPR Recertification of nearly 40 Hazelwood teachers.
