 Media Advisory WHAT: To provide a local angle for news stories related to World AIDS Day, the American Red Cross is providing an expert in HIV/AIDS education for interview purposes. Each year, the American Red Cross St. Louis Area Chapter trains more than 19,000 men, women and young people in HIV/AIDS prevention. The Red Cross is working in partnership with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, educating people on how to stop the transmission of HIV, encouraging people to respond in informative ways to people who have HIV, and helping people apply the facts about HIV to their own behavior.

WHY: It is estimated that more than 40 million people are currently living with HIV or AIDS worldwide, and approximately 40,000 new cases are occurring in the United States every year. Since AIDS was identified in the United States in 1981, more than 20 million people have died worldwide in what has become a global pandemic.
To combat the continued spread of this devastating disease, educational programs are essential. The American Red Cross is committed to reaching the community with important information in an effort to save lives.
About the American Red Cross St. Louis Area Chapter: Founded in 1917, the American Red Cross St. Louis Area Chapter provides emergency and preparedness assistance more than 407,000 times each year.
