St. Louis, Tuesday, October 18, 2005 – The unprecedented destruction caused by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita requires an American Red Cross national response that is innovative and flexible on a massive scale. With tens of thousands of families needing our assistance for the foreseeable future, the Red Cross is rapidly augmenting its cadre of trained disaster volunteers.
As a leader in this national recruitment campaign, the St. Louis Area Chapter plans to recruit and train over 800 new volunteers by November 30. After training is complete, new volunteers will be assigned to meet identified needs in feeding, sheltering, client assistance, physical and mental health services, and material support, among other key functions. Deployment to areas affected by the hurricanes is possible.
Volunteers who meet the following basic requirements are encouraged to attend a training session:
- Be 18 years of age or older, having completed a high school education
- Be in good health and sign a statement to that effect
- Read, understand and sign the Red Cross “Code of Conduct”
- Hold a valid Driver’s License
- Have and provide a Social Security Number
- Be available for a 10 to 21 day assignment away from home
In order to recruit and train new volunteers as quickly as possible, new training classes are now available. Volunteers should plan to attend one of the following sessions:
- Tuesday, November 1, 11:30a.m.-12:30 p.m.
- Tuesday, November 1, 6:00p.m.-7:00 p.m.
- Thursday, November 3, 11:30a.m.-12:30 p.m.
- Thursday, November 3, 6:00p.m.-7:00 p.m.
- Saturday, November 5, 10:00a.m.-11:00 a.m.
Each training session runs for 1 hour. Registration is not required. All sessions will be held at the American Red Cross, St. Louis Area Chapter, 10195 Corporate Square Drive, Creve Coeur, Missouri 63132 (on Lindbergh just north of Olive). For more information, call 314.516.2756.
