 Media Advisory WHAT: The American Red Cross St. Louis Area Chapter will present its Red Cross Ready Award to Trautwein Elementary School in the Mehlville School District for training each of its 486 students in emergency preparedness over the last nine months. Through presentations led by Red Cross AmeriCorps members, approximately 2,800 student participants have been reached through 115 presentations. WHEN: Tuesday, May 9, 2006 – 10:30 a.m. WHERE: Trautwein Elementary School: 5011 Ambs Road – St. Louis, MO – 63128 (Award will be presented in the school’s front lobby.) WHY: The mission of the American Red Cross is to help the community prevent prepare for and respond to disasters and emergencies. One of the ways the Red Cross accomplishes its lifesaving mission is by joining with community partners, such as Trautwein Elementary, to educate the public regarding the need to be ready for the unexpected.
The Red Cross curriculum introduced to Trautwein’s students is designed for grades K through 5 and includes disaster preparedness training related to home fires, winter storms, earthquakes and tornadoes. Other programming focuses on anti-bullying, basic First Aid, water safety, and appropriate precautions for older children who spend time home alone. In addition, presentations emphasize the importance of healthy eating, exercise and sleep. The concept of hand-washing as a method of preventing the spread of germs is also introduced.
