What: American Red Cross youth volunteers will provide an evening of fun-filled learning for Family Living Center residents on how to remain safe during disasters and weather-related emergencies. More than 20 youth will participate in interactive safety presentations, visit with East St. Louis firefighters and create a starter First Aid Kit for their families. The family Living Center, is a transitional housing facility for more than 50 people in East St. Louis. When: Today, Wednesday, July 10, 2002 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Photo Opportunities: • Interactive Safety Presentation (5:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.): American Red Cross youth volunteers will teach young children how to be safe during home fires, winter storms and earthquakes. Presentation includes interactive teaching toys. • Fire Safety Presentations (6:00 p.m. to 6:45 p.m.): East St. Louis firefighters teach fire safety to residents. Presentation includes how to wear fire gear, how to get out of a house when it’s on fire, and tours of the fire truck. • Build Your Own First Aid Kit (6:45 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.): Residents create a starter First Aid Kit to keep in their homes.
About the Family Living Center: The Family Living Center is a transitional housing facility that offers life skills training; parenting classes; education/vocation resource assistance; financial assistance and budgeting classes; legal aid resource assistance; housing search assistance; transportation assistance and on-site youth and adult computer classes to residents. The facility is designed to help residents achieve stability, increase their skill levels or incomes and develop greater determination. Residents and their families can remain at the Family Living Center for up to twenty-four months.
The Family Living Center is managed by the St. Louis Area Chapter of the American Red Cross though an agreement with the Community Development Block Grant Operations Corporation, Inc.
