 Media Advisory WHAT: The Lieutenant Governor’s Senior Service Award celebrates the many important contributions that Missouri’s senior citizens make in their local communities. To receive this award, individuals must be at least 60 years of age and volunteer a minimum of 40 hours per year in their local communities.
In a press conference today in Creve Coeur, Lt. Governor Peter Kinder will debut this new awards program and announce that Dan and Lois Flippen, a married couple from Kirkwood, Missouri who volunteer faithfully for the American Red Cross St. Louis Area Chapter, are among the first recipients of this award.

WHY: Lt. Governor Peter Kinder will host a press conference to announce Missouri’s new Senior Service Awards program and to recognize Dan and Lois Flippen for their valuable contributions to the American Red Cross. Through their work with the St. Louis Area Chapter, Dan and Lois have exemplified the spirit of volunteerism, working together as husband and wife and donating more than 1,000 combined volunteer hours in support of a variety of Red Cross programs and services each year.
The Flippens serve on the St. Louis Area Chapter’s Disaster Action Team, which responds on the scene of local disasters (house fires, flooding, etc.) to provide emergency assistance in the form of food, clothing, shelter and mental health counseling for disaster victims, while also supporting emergency personnel. Dan and Lois are also trained to respond to national disasters, and have been deployed on more than 12 such assignments across the country, working 12 to 14 hour days in three week increments. In addition, Dan and Lois are instrumental in providing training to their fellow Red Cross volunteers and serve on the Chapter’s Shelter Team, remaining ready to assist in the set-up and management of an emergency shelter in the first 12 hours of a disaster relief operation.
The American Red Cross St. Louis Area Chapter depends on the volunteer service of dedicated individuals like Dan and Lois Flippen to touch the community more than 397,000 times each year.
