St. Louis, Wednesday, May 25, 2005 – Seventeen students from six area high schools recently participated in CPR Saturday at American Red Cross St. Louis Area Chapter headquarters in Creve Coeur. The opportunity was designed for active Red Cross YouthCorps members to receive free training and certification in CPR and First Aid. In preparation to respond in an emergency situation, students from Belleville West, Gateway Institute of Technology, Hazelwood Central, John Burroughs, Ladue and Roosevelt high schools learned and demonstrated lifesaving skills.
Red Cross YouthCorps groups are established in area schools with the support of the St. Louis Area Chapter and provide an opportunity for students in grades 8 through 12 to participate in peer-to-peer educational presentations, community service projects and anti-bullying programs. Last year, members reached more than 3,600 peers with information related to disaster education, CPR and First Aid curriculum.
As active YouthCorps members, in addition to free training in CPR and First Aid, students are eligible to attend an annual 3-day, 2-night Leadership Development Camp at the YMCA’s Trout Lodge in Potosi. Any student interested in meeting other young people in a fun and safe environment, while focusing on creative outreach opportunities, can start a Red Cross YouthCorps group in their school. As a first step, at least six interested students and a school sponsor are needed.
“Opportunities like CPR Saturday and Leadership Development Camp are added bonuses of active involvement in Red Cross YouthCorps,” said Deane Adam, Director of AmeriCorps and Youth Services for the St. Louis Area Chapter. “Our youth services programs build upon the mission of the Red Cross to help our communities prevent, prepare for, and respond to disasters and emergencies.”
