Recognition highlights preparedness outreach to students, faculty, staff and parents
St. Louis, Wednesday, May 16, 2007 - The American Red Cross St. Louis Area Chapter recently presented the
Red Cross Ready Award
to three schools in the St. Louis metropolitan area for embracing emergency preparedness by reaching students, faculty, staff and parents with important Red Cross safety information during the 2006-2007 school year. These schools include Lawson Elementary School (Hazelwood School District), Mann Elementary School (St. Louis Public School District), and Queen of All Saints School.
The Red Cross has delivered presentations in each school to highlight the importance of healthy nutrition and preparing for a variety of emergency situations. In these three schools alone, the Red Cross' message has reached nearly 1,500 students of all ages.
"A growing number of local schools are opening their doors for Red Cross presentations that feature the message of emergency preparedness," said Deane Adam, director of youth services for the St. Louis Area Chapter.
"In 2006, only one school in the St. Louis area received the Red Cross Ready Award. This year, however, 15 local schools will be recognized for their efforts in emergency preparedness education. We appreciate Principals Betty Scheller, Brian Zimerman, and Cathy Johns for welcoming Red Cross safety education at Lawson, Mann and Queen of All Saints."

About Red Cross School Presentations:
Red Cross school programs encourage families to make emergency preparedness a personal priority. Presentations are designed to prepare students, faculty, staff and parents to be ready for a variety of emergency situations - from home fires and winter storms to earthquakes and tornados. During training, the Red Cross also emphasizes basic First Aid, water safety and the importance of healthy eating, exercise and sleep. In addition, presentations highlight anti-bullying and the concept of hand-washing as a method of preventing the spread of germs.
