St. Louis, Thursday, July 20, 2006 – The American Red Cross St. Louis Area Chapter has opened a fourth emergency shelter at
Hazelwood Central High School
in Florissant (15875 New Halls Ferry Road) as extreme heat and widespread power outages continue to impact the metropolitan area. The St. Louis Area Chapter estimates that approximately 500 people will be sheltered overnight in the four Red Cross shelter locations.
All Red Cross shelters will remain open for as long as necessary at the following locations:
St. Louis City:
• Marquette Recreation Center – 4025 Minnesota Avenue – South St. Louis City
• Wohl Recreation Center – 1515 N. Kingshighway Blvd. – North St. Louis City
St. Louis County:
• Hazelwood Central High School – 15875 New Halls Ferry Road – Florissant
Metro East:
• Emge Junior High School – 7401 Westchester Drive – Belleville, IL
As assessment continues, additional locations for shelters are under evaluation and will be opened as needed. For more sheltering information, the public is encouraged to call the St. Louis Area Chapter at 314.516.2700. In addition to the emergency shelters, the Red Cross will continue to support area cooling sites operated by the United Way’s Operation Weather Survival by providing cold beverages as needed.
