Large Red Cross emergency shelter is no longer needed; additional assistance available on individual basis
St. Louis, Tuesday, January 16, 2007 - As power continues to be restored throughout the metropolitan area, the large full-service Red Cross emergency shelter at Harvester Christian Church in St. Charles County is no longer needed and closed on Tuesday, January 16. The American Red Cross St. Louis Area Chapter will continue to assist people who remain without power on an individual basis by providing emergency assistance, including shelter. The public is encouraged to call the St. Louis Area Chapter at 314.516.2800 for any additional emergency needs related to the power outage and extreme temperatures.
About the Local Red Cross Relief Effort:
Following the recent severe ice storm, the Red Cross sheltered 30 people over two nights and served nearly 600 meals and snacks through its large 24-hour emergency shelter. To date, more than 30 Red Cross workers have helped with emergency needs that include shelter, food and logistics.
The American Red Cross remains focused on helping the largest number of people in the most efficient manner possible. Through its partnership with emergency management officials, the St. Louis Area Chapter has supported area warming centers by delivering cots, blankets and comfort kits (containing hygiene items) to facilities managed by local municipalities. In addition, the Red Cross has provided approximately 600 Heater Meals for people seeking help through those locations.
"Once again, the metropolitan area has partnered in an exceptional way to help others in their time of need," said Mary Anderson, director of disaster readiness and response for the American Red Cross St. Louis Area Chapter.
"We appreciate our friends in emergency management, local and state government, emergency response, and other community agencies for their ongoing support."
