and take part in fire and tornado simulations
WHAT:
The American Red Cross Metro East Service Center will host an all-day training event for more than 225 Girl Scouts from the River Bluffs Council to focus on the importance of emergency preparedness. Girl Scout participants will rotate through seven different 30-minute courses.
The Girl Scouts will learn first-hand the actions to take during a fire and tornado by taking part in two simulations. The Red Cross has partnered with the Collinsville Fire Department and Scott Air Force Base to provide these opportunities. At the conclusion of the event, the Girl Scouts will complete the requirements for their First Aid Badge.
Twelve Red Cross instructors will lead training sessions throughout the day. The Red Cross courses will focus on basic First Aid skills, how to build your own Disaster Supply Kit and First Aid Kit, general safety tips, and pandemic flu awareness and prevention. In addition, local firefighters will be available for safety demonstrations.

WHY:
With the recent flooding activity in the area, the St. Louis Area Chapter is encouraging the public to embrace this unique opportunity to focus on preventing, preparing for and responding to disasters and emergencies. The Red Cross has made preparedness easier than ever before through its Be Red Cross Ready program, which streamlines the process into three easy steps - 1. Get a Kit, 2. Make a Plan and 3. Be Informed.
"With the recent flooding activity in the St. Louis Area, the Red Cross is excited to again be a part of this training opportunity," said Sandy Vaughn, manager of the American Red Cross Metro East Service Center in Fairview Heights, IL. "The Red Cross and the Girl Scouts of River Bluffs Council have partnered to train and award the First Aid Badge to over 500 Girl Scouts for the past five years. This success and strong partnership will result in 225 of our young neighbors, the largest group ever, receiving their First Aid Badges this year."
