8/9/2006 - American Red Cross Lifesaver Awards to Spotlight St. Louis Heroes

The St. Louis Area Chapter will feature nine stories of bravery and heroism during a Lifesaver Award ceremony on Monday, August 7 at 1:30 p.m. A variety of individuals from all walks of life will receive honors - from police officers, nurses and an AED salesman to YMCA employees, neighbors and a postal worker.

8/9/2006 - 25 Teams Participate in 10th Annual American Red Cross Lifeguard Competition

The St. Louis Area Chapter trains nearly 37,000 people in water safety programs each year. In support of the Red Cross mission to save lives, the Chapter recently hosted the 10th Annual American Red Cross Lifeguard Competition at Queeny Park. During the event, lifeguards from 25 teams competed in scenario-based events designed to enhance rescue skills.

8/9/2006 - American Red Cross Honors Jefferson County Volunteers at Appreciation Luncheon

The Jefferson County Service Center recently hosted its annual Volunteer Recognition Luncheon at the Berkshire Grill in High Ridge to honor local residents for their service to the organization and community. Recognition included the Jefferson County Business Partner of the Year Award, the Jefferson County Honor Awards, and the Jefferson County Outstanding Volunteer Award.

8/9/2006 - Missouri State Fair Ticket Sales to Benefit American Red Cross

A special one-day pass to the 2006 Missouri State Fair, August 10-20, is on sale now at area Lowe’s. The $20 pass provides entry to the Fair as well as an Unlimited Carnival Ride Wristband for all day unlimited ride privileges. For each State Fair unlimited-ride pass sold at Lowe’s, $2 will be donated to the American Red Cross Missouri Disaster Relief Fund for relief to disaster victims statewide.

8/9/2006 - Red Cross Concludes Shelter Operation, Completes Distribution of Heater Meals, and Partners with United Way for Food Box Program

As power resumes across the St. Louis area and the need for emergency shelter has concluded, the American Red Cross St. Louis Area Chapter has now closed its four emergency shelters. Through the sheltering program, Red Cross housed 750 people. Over 200 Red Cross volunteers have participated in the relief effort, providing emergency assistance for those hardest hit by the disaster.

A Disaster Action Team from the American Red Cross St. Louis Area Chapter responded to a multi-unit apartment fire in the 3300-block of Cross Keys in Florissant this morning to support displaced residents and emergency personnel. The Red Cross is providing food and clothing to four families (five adults and eight children).

As power continues to resume across the St. Louis area, the American Red Cross St. Louis Area Chapter is seeing a significant drop in the need for shelter and emergency assistance. Because they are no longer needed, the Red Cross has now closed three of its four emergency shelters.

The American Red Cross St. Louis Area Chapter responded to a Spanish Lake house fire in the 1400-block of Crossett Drive this afternoon. The Red Cross will provide emergency food, clothing and shelter to a family of eight (five adults and three children).

7/25/2006 - Red Cross Continues Shelter Operation and Now Takes to the Streets to Distribute 50,000 Meals as Power Outage Continues

As the power outage continues in the St. Louis area, the American Red Cross St. Louis Area Chapter continues to operate four emergency shelters throughout the metropolitan area, housing 750 people to date. Over 120 Red Cross volunteers are participating in the relief effort, providing emergency assistance for those hardest hit by the disaster. Over 5,000 meals and snacks have been provided so far; hot meals are prepared and provided in partnership with volunteers from the Southern Baptists, Missouri Convention.

7/25/2006 - American Red Cross Disaster Action Teams Respond to Four St. Louis House Fires

Disaster Action Teams from the American Red Cross St. Louis Area Chapter responded to four St. Louis house fires on Friday, July 21 and Saturday, July 22. Red Cross volunteers provided support for emergency personnel, and emergency assistance for a total of four families, including 18 adults and children.

7/25/2006 - Anheuser-Busch Donates $100,000 to American Red Cross for St. Louis Storm Relief Efforts

Anheuser-Busch is donating $100,000 to the St. Louis Area Chapter of the American Red Cross to help those impacted by severe storms that struck the region this week, as well as for those suffering from the unrelenting high temperatures in the area. In addition, Anheuser-Busch has delivered a total of 4,300 cases of safe drinking water to emergency relief centers in the St. Louis and Metro East areas.

7/25/2006 - American Red Cross Disaster Action Team Responds to Fire at Jefferson County Assisted Living Center

On Monday afternoon, an American Red Cross Disaster Action Team from the Jefferson County Service Center responded to a fire in an assisted living facility in the 600-block of Woodland Meadows in Arnold. The Red Cross will support the recovery effort of those affected by the fire.

7/25/2006 - American Red Cross Conducts Emergency Drill in Preparation for Large-Scale Disaster

The St. Louis Area Chapter conducted a two-day emergency drill on June 7 and 8 in St. Louis City and St. Charles County as part of an ongoing effort to enhance Red Cross readiness. The exercise supports the Red Cross mission to help the community prevent, prepare for and respond to disasters and emergencies.

7/25/2006 - Illinois Law Expands Good Samaritan Protection

Governor Blagojevich (D-Illinois) recently signed SB 2303 into law, expanding protection for "Good Samaritans" in Illinois. The new legislation states that any person currently certified in first aid by the American Red Cross and others, and acts in good faith to administer free first aid, is protected for intervening to help.

7/25/2006 - American Red Cross Disaster Action Teams Respond to Two South St. Louis House Fires

Disaster Action Teams from the St. Louis Area Chapter responded to two South St. Louis house fires on Tuesday - one in the 4400-block of Osceola St. and one in the 5700-block of Southwest Avenue. Red Cross volunteers and caseworkers will provide support, including food and clothing, to those in need.

7/25/2006 - American Red Cross Welcomes Israel’s Magen David Adom and Palestine Red Crescent Society to International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement

The American Red Cross welcomes and celebrates the membership of Magen David Adom (MDA) and the Palestine Red Crescent Society to the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. For more than 50 years, the American Red Cross Board of Governors has considered admission of MDA a policy priority. The inclusion of these two National Societies is a significant step towards universality for the Movement.

7/25/2006 - American Red Cross Disaster Action Teams Respond to Five St. Louis House Fires Over the Weekend

Disaster Action Teams from the St. Louis Area Chapter responded to five St. Louis house fires over the weekend, providing support for emergency responders and immediate care for the families who lost their homes and personal belongings. In all, Red Cross workers have helped 19 people with immediate shelter, food, clothing, and other needs.

7/25/2006 - Mayor Robert G. Lowery Sr., the City of Florissant and the American Red Cross invite you to Community Heroes Day

The City of Florissant and the American Red Cross will partner to host Community Heroes Day on Saturday, July 8 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the James J. Eagan Center in Florissant. During this free event, the public is invited to join with police officers and firefighters by taking two steps to become a hero: 1. donate blood and/or 2. learn CPR.

7/25/2006 - American Red Cross Launches New CPR and First Aid Curriculum

New national Red Cross guidelines have been issued for CPR and first aid in an ongoing effort to improve the survival rate related to cardiac arrest and other sudden illnesses. In light of these new guidelines and in support of its mission to help people prevent, prepare for and respond to disasters and emergencies, the St. Louis Area Chapter has launched new CPR and first aid curriculum, effective July, 2006.

7/25/2006 - American Red Cross Hosts Leadership Development Camp for Youth Volunteers

Nineteen Red Cross youth volunteers from the St. Louis metropolitan area recently attended a three-day Leadership Development Camp sponsored by the St. Louis Area Chapter. These youth are active members of Red Cross YouthCorps, contribute to at least one community service project and Red Cross teaching opportunity each year, and are certified in CPR, First Aid and the use of Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs).

7/25/2006 - Red Cross Disaster Action Team Responds to Shiloh, Illinois Apartment Fire

The Metro East Service Center in Fairview Heights, IL dispatched a Disaster Action Team to a multi-unit apartment fire in the 100-block of Adeline in Shiloh, IL on Monday morning. Red Cross caseworkers are supporting the recovery effort of nine families displaced by the blaze.

7/25/2006 - Mound City Medical Forum Donates $1,000 to American Red Cross Measles Initiative

Approximately 1,000 children in Africa will receive measles vaccinations because of a recent $1,000 donation from the Mound City Medical Forum to the American Red Cross Measles Initiative. Measles is the leading cause of death among children in Africa. In December 2001, the American Red Cross and other partners launched the Measles Initiative, focusing on providing vaccinations to African children. Each vaccine costs less than one dollar.

7/25/2006 - American Red Cross Invites Lifeguard Teams to Participate in 10th Annual Lifeguard Competition

The St. Louis Area Chapter is seeking Missouri and Illinois lifeguard teams for its 10th Annual Lifeguard Competition on July 23 at Queeny Park from 7:15 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Teams will have the opportunity to demonstrate and enhance their lifesaving skills through a series of scenario-based testing exercises, including first aid, the rescue of passive and active victims, and the appropriate management of spinal injuries.
