The St. Louis Area Chapter will feature nine stories of bravery and heroism during a Lifesaver Award ceremony on Monday, August 7 at 1:30 p.m. A variety of individuals from all walks of life will receive honors - from police officers, nurses and an AED salesman to YMCA employees, neighbors and a postal worker. |

25 Teams Participate in 10th Annual American Red Cross Lifeguard Competition
The St. Louis Area Chapter trains nearly 37,000 people in water safety programs each year. In support of the Red Cross mission to save lives, the Chapter recently hosted the 10th Annual American Red Cross Lifeguard Competition at Queeny Park. During the event, lifeguards from 25 teams competed in scenario-based events designed to enhance rescue skills. |

American Red Cross Honors Jefferson County Volunteers at Appreciation Luncheon
The Jefferson County Service Center recently hosted its annual Volunteer Recognition Luncheon at the Berkshire Grill in High Ridge to honor local residents for their service to the organization and community. Recognition included the Jefferson County Business Partner of the Year Award, the Jefferson County Honor Awards, and the Jefferson County Outstanding Volunteer Award. |

Missouri State Fair Ticket Sales to Benefit American Red Cross
A special one-day pass to the 2006 Missouri State Fair, August 10-20, is on sale now at area Lowe’s. The $20 pass provides entry to the Fair as well as an Unlimited Carnival Ride Wristband for all day unlimited ride privileges. For each State Fair unlimited-ride pass sold at Lowe’s, $2 will be donated to the American Red Cross Missouri Disaster Relief Fund for relief to disaster victims statewide. |

Red Cross Continues Shelter Operation and Now Takes to the Streets to Distribute 50,000 Meals as Power Outage Continues
As the power outage continues in the St. Louis area, the American Red Cross St. Louis Area Chapter continues to operate four emergency shelters throughout the metropolitan area, housing 750 people to date. Over 120 Red Cross volunteers are participating in the relief effort, providing emergency assistance for those hardest hit by the disaster. Over 5,000 meals and snacks have been provided so far; hot meals are prepared and provided in partnership with volunteers from the Southern Baptists, Missouri Convention. |

Anheuser-Busch Donates $100,000 to American Red Cross for St. Louis Storm Relief Efforts
Anheuser-Busch is donating $100,000 to the St. Louis Area Chapter of the American Red Cross to help those impacted by severe storms that struck the region this week, as well as for those suffering from the unrelenting high temperatures in the area. In addition, Anheuser-Busch has delivered a total of 4,300 cases of safe drinking water to emergency relief centers in the St. Louis and Metro East areas. |

Illinois Law Expands Good Samaritan Protection
Governor Blagojevich (D-Illinois) recently signed SB 2303 into law, expanding protection for "Good Samaritans" in Illinois. The new legislation states that any person currently certified in first aid by the American Red Cross and others, and acts in good faith to administer free first aid, is protected for intervening to help. |

American Red Cross Launches New CPR and First Aid Curriculum
New national Red Cross guidelines have been issued for CPR and first aid in an ongoing effort to improve the survival rate related to cardiac arrest and other sudden illnesses. In light of these new guidelines and in support of its mission to help people prevent, prepare for and respond to disasters and emergencies, the St. Louis Area Chapter has launched new CPR and first aid curriculum, effective July, 2006. |

American Red Cross Hosts Leadership Development Camp for Youth Volunteers
Nineteen Red Cross youth volunteers from the St. Louis metropolitan area recently attended a three-day Leadership Development Camp sponsored by the St. Louis Area Chapter. These youth are active members of Red Cross YouthCorps, contribute to at least one community service project and Red Cross teaching opportunity each year, and are certified in CPR, First Aid and the use of Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs). |

Mound City Medical Forum Donates $1,000 to American Red Cross Measles Initiative
Approximately 1,000 children in Africa will receive measles vaccinations because of a recent $1,000 donation from the Mound City Medical Forum to the American Red Cross Measles Initiative. Measles is the leading cause of death among children in Africa. In December 2001, the American Red Cross and other partners launched the Measles Initiative, focusing on providing vaccinations to African children. Each vaccine costs less than one dollar. |

American Red Cross Invites Lifeguard Teams to Participate in 10th Annual Lifeguard Competition
The St. Louis Area Chapter is seeking Missouri and Illinois lifeguard teams for its 10th Annual Lifeguard Competition on July 23 at Queeny Park from 7:15 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Teams will have the opportunity to demonstrate and enhance their lifesaving skills through a series of scenario-based testing exercises, including first aid, the rescue of passive and active victims, and the appropriate management of spinal injuries. |
