American Red Cross Opens Fourth 24-Hour Emergency Shelter to Provide Warm Refuge During Power Outage
The American Red Cross St. Louis Area Chapter has opened a fourth emergency shelter as part of an ongoing response to widespread power outages that resulted from a severe winter storm. These shelters are open 24-hours to provide safe refuge from the cold temperatures. At each of these facilities, the Red Cross is providing assistance for emergency needs that includes shelter, food and health services. As assessment continues, additional shelters will be opened if the need arises. |

American Red Cross to Open Three Emergency Shelters as Winter Storm Leaves Thousands Without Power

American Red Cross to Host Workplace Safety Seminar with Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA)
The American Red Cross St. Louis Area Chapter and the Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) will host a Workplace Safety Seminar designed to help businesses interpret and meet OSHA standards related to first aid, bloodborne pathogens and emergency preparedness. The training will focus on the tools necessary for businesses to prepare for an emergency situation. To advance its lifesaving mission, the St. Louis Area Chapter trains more than 85,000 people each year in first aid and CPR. |

American Red Cross Encourages Preparedness During Fire Prevention Week - Oct. 8-14
The American Red Cross urges families to prepare for a home fire during Fire Prevention Week, October 8-14. According to a recent poll by the Red Cross, four out of five Americans are unaware that home fires are the most common disaster in the United States, and only 26 percent of families have actually developed and practiced a home fire escape plan. In the metropolitan area, the American Red Cross St. Louis Area Chapter provides immediate assistance such as food, clothing and shelter to more than 1,100 families who lose their homes to fire each year. |

The American Red Cross, the Department of Homeland Security and others are working together to raise awareness of the need for emergency preparedness to be a personal priority. On the first day of National Preparedness Month, the Red Cross launched its new preparedness initiative, "Be Red Cross Ready", which outlines three steps to help people be as prepared as possible for a disaster or emergency. American Red Cross Provides Assistance to Families Impacted by Severe Weather
American Red Cross workers have assisted families across the state affected by recent severe weather. Within its jurisdiction, three teams of relief workers from the St. Louis Area Chapter have conducted damage assessment and administered casework throughout Iron and Madison counties. The Chapter has provided emergency food, clothing and shelter to 18 families. Outside its jurisdiction, the St. Louis Area Chapter has provided human and material resource support for the areas most directly impacted in southeast Missouri, deploying an Emergency Response Vehicle and six local Red Cross workers. |
