Local Red Cross Volunteer Receives Lifesaving Award of Merit
On March 5, the St. Louis Area Chapter presented the Lifesaving Award of Merit from the American National Red Cross to local Red Cross volunteer Jim Cusic of Fairview Heights, IL. The award honors Cusic for using CPR and an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) to save a life. The Lifesaving Award of Merit is signed by President George W. Bush and is bestowed for utilizing Red Cross training. Prior to this national recognition, Cusic received the Red Cross Lifesaver Award from the St. Louis Area Chapter for his heroic actions. |

Local Red Cross Raises $7,000 for Measles Vaccinations in Africa and South Asia
To increase awareness regarding the need for measles vaccinations in Africa and South Asia, and to raise the necessary funds to save children's lives, the American Red Cross St. Louis Area Chapter sold long-stemmed chocolate roses during the weeks surrounding Valentine's Day and raised approximately $7,000. Dedicated Red Cross volunteers assembled each rose by hand and generous community partners sold them for $2 each to benefit the Measles Initiative. Because each measles vaccination costs less than one dollar, there is a potential to save two lives for every rose sold. |

American Red Cross Introduces New Lifeguarding Program
In time for the busy spring and summer aquatics season, the American Red Cross St. Louis Area Chapter has launched a newly revised lifeguarding program in conjunction with Red Cross chapters nationwide. The revised training is designed to help aquatic facilities develop and implement a comprehensive program to best meet their unique needs. All courses reflect the latest science in first aid, CPR and emergency cardiovascular care, as well as the latest developments in water safety protocols and rescue skills. |

The Red Cross stands ready to provide emergency assistance as needed. Red Cross volunteers are on standby and pre-positioned supplies are ready, including cots, blankets, and food. A winter storm can last for several days and can be accompanied by high winds, freezing rain or sleet, heavy snowfall, and cold temperatures. Since opening five emergency shelters to accommodate residents during extended power outages, the Red Cross has sheltered 1,219 people and served 12,549 meals and snacks over five nights. The Red Cross continues to partner with emergency management officials, the National Guard and many local municipalities and agencies to provide assistance, including the Southern Baptists, Missouri Convention to prepare as many as 1,000 meals a day. Two Red Cross shelters remain open 24-hours to provide safe refuge from the cold temperatures for those who have lost power. At each of these full-service facilities, more than 160 Red Cross shelter volunteers have provided assistance for emergency needs that include shelter, food and health services. In addition to operating full-service shelters, more than 50 Red Cross Disaster Action Team volunteers have provided assistance including shelter, food, clothing, health services, blankets and hygiene items to 107 people impacted by 26 fires since December 1, 2006. |
