When Gloria Besterfield was a senior in high school, her father asked if she would like to donate blood with him at an American Red Cross blood drive. Gloria's father was a regular blood donor and he encouraged Gloria to make blood donation a priority in her life as well.
"As I lay on the cot next to my father and saw the red blood flowing out of our veins, I was filled with such overwhelming joy knowing that my donation would help someone survive an illness or disaster," she explained. "It was especially rewarding for me to have shared the experience with my father. He was so proud of me because I filled my bag just as fast as he did and I didn't pass out or feel sick," she said with a laugh. "After that day I was hooked and I began donating at blood drives as frequently as possible."
In the days following September 11, 2001, Gloria was inspired to contact the St. Louis Area Chapter to become a volunteer. She was put to work immediately assisting at blood drives, serving on the Disaster Action Team , and helping with administrative duties in the Volunteer Resources department.
"Gloria is a highly valued member of our department," said Mary Rosen, director of Volunteer Resources for the St. Louis Area Chapter. "Her unwavering commitment to the Red Cross, and her passion for her work, make her an incredible asset to the Chapter."
Gloria volunteers seventy hours or more each month at the St. Louis Area Chapter Headquarters in Creve Coeur. When asked what motivates her interest in community service, Gloria says, "Volunteering is a very fulfilling activity that can be done in a number of ways. No matter where you live, what your skill level, or background, everyone has something unique to offer. Even a simple smile or a small act of kindness can make a world of difference to someone in need."
