It’s a Team Effort for Clara Barton Members Judy and Harvey Harris Who “Believe In the Mission”

Judy and Harvey Harris, two of St. Louis’ most prominent community volunteers, have been proud supporters, donors, and proponents of the American Red Cross St. Louis Area Chapter for over a decade. “When we first became involved with the Red Cross, right away we learned that services are needed 24/7, 365-days a year,” remarks Judy. “It’s an organization for everyone in the community to participate in and benefit from.”

The Harris’ first joined the Red Cross 15 years ago when Harvey was asked to serve on a Task Force for Board Development. “At the time, I was involved with KETC and the St. Louis Science Center, and the thought was that I could help develop the Board of the Red Cross,” explains Harvey. “I was impressed with the broad spectrum of Red Cross services within our community—they help everyone.”

During his tenure, Harvey served as Board Chair and Chair of the National Rules Committee. A few years later, Judy began volunteering following the floods of ’93. “I was recruited to chair a special event
for the Chapter, eventually served on the Board of Directors, and then Chaired the Financial Development Committee.”

During their time on the Board, both Judy and Harvey learned the impact the Red Cross has on people. They both enjoyed attending the Lifesaver Awards, a Red Cross event that celebrates individuals who have saved a life. “Hearing the stories is very moving,” Harvey says. A few years ago at the event, Judy sat next to a man whose hand had been severed during an industrial accident. Thanks to Red Cross training, his co-workers saved his life and his hand. “At the ceremony, I was able to shake that man’s hand. It was truly remarkable and something I will never forget,” recalls Judy.

While Judy and Harvey have retired from the Board, they continue to support the Chapter through their membership in the Clara Barton Society. With their annual, unrestricted gift, Judy and Harvey understand that they are making their community a better place to live.

“Preparedness is so important,” explains Judy. “The Red Cross does such a good job of preparing our community with CPR training, communicating the importance of emergency supplies kits and offering lifeguard and water safety training.” Harvey completely agrees. “The Red Cross really is the first responder to disasters, something that occurs on a daily basis within our community.” he adds. “It’s unlike any other organization in St. Louis. It is truly unique and we continue to believe in the mission.”
